So, the beginning of the External Brief project. Let us travel back to that fateful night in the Dragon's Head Inn over a few pints of Rhymney Best Bitter, yes let's go back there.
Steve Northcott, respected student film maker and accomplished composer says: "I think I'd like my cat to be the logo for my website, you should make him in maya or something."
I says, says I: "Sweet."
Thats basically what I'll be doing then. Steve is developing a website along with a few of his colleagues which allows budding musicians and bands to upload their songs, and then sell them through the site. The site's "mascot" will be an animated cat, Steve's cat, called TiggerBush. A kind of odd hybrid between the name Tigger and George W. Bush. Don't ask.
Steve wants TiggerBush to look as realistsic as I can get him, whilst being rigged in a way that will allow the digital puppet to perform un-catlike movements and actions where required. This mix of bipedal and quadropedal movement will present a unique rigging challenge, and the fur effects etc are a great challenge alone.
Once my learning agreement has been finalised I can streamline my research a bit, but until then it would be wise to do the following:
- Compile a detailed photo reference of TiggerBush.
- Look at previous animated cats (Puss in boots in Shrek 2 for example.)
- Study cat anatomy and bone structure.
- Decide what the actual end product will be.
- Practice rigging and some basic fur.
Once things are a bit less crazy it will start coming together.
